Children & Meth
August, 2006

In Pennsylvania - An undercover state trooper reported that a 3-year-old boy crawled up into his lab while four adults were demonstrating how to cook Meth.  The officer saw the youngster playing in the area where the Meth was being cooked.  The four adults were arrested; the 3-year-old and a 2-year-old boy were taken into protective custody.

In Indiana – Deputies investigating a tip arrested two people on drug charges.   Officers found over 100-grams of marijuana, Meth and drug paraphernalia during a search.  A child was taken into protective custody.

In Oregon - Agents from the Central Oregon Drug Enforcement Team found a pound of Meth in a hidden compartment of a van in a Wal-Mart parking lot.  The driver of the van, a 33 year-old man, was arrested on multiple charges.  Two passengers in the van, an 18-year-old woman and a 2-year-old child, were allowed to go free.

In Indiana - A S.W.A.T. team raid on a house ended an investigation into a source where Meth was made, used and distributed.   The investigation ended because the undercover officer assigned to the case saw one of the suspects bring her child to the house.  Officers found two active Meth labs at the home and marijuana plants growing on the property.

In Michigan - A 41-year-old man was sentenced to serve 70 months to 20 years in prison for operating a Meth lab in his trailer home. When police raided the home, they found a plastic bottle of chemicals used to make Meth cooking on the stove, and the suspect’s girlfriend and two of her daughters sleeping in a bedroom.

In Indiana – A woman and her two young children were told to leave their home and be checked by a doctor after police found a Meth lab in an attached home.  Three men were arrested for manufacturing Meth.

In Ohio - Firefighters responding to a house fire turned up evidence of an active Meth lab.  Investigators believe the fire started while people were cooking Meth in the home, but may have a difficult time proving the allegations, since the site was reduced to rubble.  Officers did find hundreds of empty containers in some nearby woods that they believe point toward a long-time operation.  Three children living on the property may be placed in foster care and the parents could be charged with child endangering.  Investigators are questioning four suspects.

In Texas – Authorities investigating a call on a strange odor in a residential area found a Meth lab – along with a child and a sick, elderly woman.  The man who answered the door gave officers permission to search.  When they walked into the living room, a woman came out of the bedroom with a bag of dope in her hand.  The man and woman were arrested.  The deputies also found an 80-year old woman family member, who has cancer and heart disease, and the couple's six-year-old son sleeping just feet from hazardous materials.  The couple has been charged with manufacturing with intent to deliver, possession of Meth and endangering a child.   The boy was taken by child protective services, and the elderly woman is with another relative.

In North Carolina – A 53-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman were arrested when authorities found a Meth lab, Meth, marijuana, two guns and drug paraphernalia after executing a search warrant.  Officers also found two small children living in the home; they have been placed with Social Services.

In Ohio – A 26-year-old woman was sentenced to five years in prison for endangering the welfare of a child for smoking Meth while she was pregnant.  She pleaded guilty to using Meth during her pregnancy - even while she was in labor. She says she went into labor while smoking Meth, and when her labor became more intense, she smoked marijuana.  She delivered the baby along the side of the road.

In Arkansas - An elementary school speech therapist pleaded not guilty to two counts of delivery of Meth.  The 49-year-old man is accused of selling Meth to confidential informants on two occasions.

In Nevada - A couple faces charges of possessing ingredients to make Meth near a playground in the apartment complex where they live, and also of growing marijuana.  The 40-year-old woman and 27-year-old man are accused of setting up a red phosphorus Meth lab.  Both are charged with four felonies, including charges of allowing the woman’s one-year-old child to be present during the other violations. At the time of the bust, the woman tested positive for marijuana and was six months pregnant.

In North Carolina – A 34-year-old man, principal of a school for students with behavioral problems, is among 27-people indicted in investigations of Meth distribution rings. The principal is in federal custody; he has been suspended without pay and dismissal proceedings are underway.

In Minnesota – When police raided a suspected home Meth lab, they found a five-year-old in the residence with five adults and an active Meth lab, drug paraphernalia, and 90-grams of Meth.   Three adults were arrested for conspiracy to manufacture Meth. The child was placed in protective custody.

In Kentucky - A 43-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman were pulled over in their car after a store clerk called police with concerns about their purchases.   Officers discovered two boxes of a store-brand pseudoephedrine, 15 assorted boxes of pseudoephedrine products, a respirator, Mason jar, rubber gloves, and receipts showing the purchase of pseudoephedrine products from other stores on the same date.  A 15-year-old boy was also in the car. The suspects are charged with illegal assembly of chemicals and child endangering

In Wyoming - O
fficers arrested 10 people on charges related to the delivery of Meth and another in connection with a burglary tied to the larger Meth investigation.  Seven more arrest warrants are pending in the case.  An undisclosed amount of Meth was seized over the course of the investigation.  Investigators believe most of the Meth came from a single source.  Four children were placed in protective custody with the state Department of Family Services during the course of the arrests.

In Pennsylvania - Police investigating a tip about a possible home Meth lab arrested two women for Meth manufacturing.  One suspect’s four- and five-year old children were in the house at the time.

In Oklahoma - An anonymous tip led to the discovery and destruction of a fully operational Meth lab.  Four people, two men and two women, were arrested. Three children found living in the home were placed in the custody of the tribe’s child welfare office.

In Ohio – A man and woman landed in jail on Meth-related charges.  They were accused of Meth manufacturing after police searched their home.  Officers also found a 4-year-old child in the home.

In Oregon - A 13-year-old girl was hospitalized after overdosing on Meth that she allegedly bought from a transient woman.  The girl began experiencing "numbness below the waist, rapid heartbeat, difficulty breathing and stomach pain" after smoking Meth in her home.  Another minor and a 19-year-old woman were with her. The 19-year-old is charged with possession of Meth and two counts of delivery of Meth to a minor.  Officers are not sure where the girl's parents were as the juveniles were doing drugs in their house.

In Nevada - Police arrested a 54-year-old woman suspected of selling Meth and marijuana out of her motel room while her grandchildren and a pregnant 16-year-old were present.  She faces four counts of child abuse, possession of Meth and marijuana and a warrant charging her with furnishing alcohol to minors.  Her grandchildren, 17-months, 3- and 5-years-old, along with the 16-year-old pregnant girl were placed into the custody of social services.   Police investigating a report of suspected drug activity found the woman and children sleeping inside the room. Officers were concerned no food was available for the children and found Meth, drug pipes and scales in the woman’s purse near stacks of pornographic pictures.  The pregnant girl also has not been in school since she was in the sixth grade.  The children had head and body lice.

In North Carolina – When police busted a Meth lab, they arrested a 37-year-old woman and a 29-year-old man.  They also discovered two children, a 6-year-old boy and a 3-year-old girl.  The children were placed into the care of Social Services until the mother could be located.  Officers believe the little girl is the daughter of the arrested man.

In Oregon - Two children, 17- and 11-years-old, were taken into protective custody by child welfare workers when their 35-year-old mother was arrested on drug charges.  Officers discovered the woman in a Meth lab in a home they were raiding on another case.
