These are
recommended procedures developed by the National Alliance for Drug
Endangered Children. Various localities may need to adjust the strategies
depending on their resources. As local, state and federal protocols are
approved and implemented, this information will be updated.
Child protective
services employees are a crucial link between the child, law enforcement
and the medical community. Youngsters will seek answers and reassurance
from the CPS worker; law enforcement and medical personnel will depend on
CPS to relay instructions and questions to the child.
The primary
duties of CPS in the initial stage of the DEC case include:
1) Assist law enforcement
in the collection and documentation of the scene from the child's
perspective. Decide who will photograph scene.
2) Transport or accompany
child to medical facility for exam and evaluation.
3) Ensure placement of
child in a safe environment.
