Federal Remediation Legislation

The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill instructing the Environmental Protection Agency to develop guidelines to help state and local authorities in cleaning up former Meth lab sites. The “Methamphetamine Remediation Research Act of 2007” calls for research into lab contamination and the impact of Meth residue on children and first responders, among many other items.  The act also outlines the need for adequate detection of Meth, standardized cleaning practices and cost estimates.  The bill would make compliance to these standards voluntary.
The House has authorized appropriations of $1,750,000 for each of the fiscal years 2007 and 2008 to the EPA to fulfill the instructions, as well as another $750,000 in each of the same fiscal years to the National Institute of Standards and Technology for the research and standards portion of the bill.
