MAPP-SD Events & Trainings - Current

January

10 – Rapid City MAPP-SD Meth Prevention Coordinator Nikkole Abbas will present information about the signs of Meth use and labs in a community awareness session for the LaCrosse Estates Community/Neighborhood Watch crime prevention program, beginning at noon.

22 – Rapid City The MAPP-SD Rapid City Meth Coalition has invited law enforcement, prosecution, a circuit judge, probation, parole and Community Alternatives of the Black Hills to share information about Meth’s impact on the judicial system in western South Dakota.  The panel will also answer questions. Community and media are highly encouraged to attend.  The meeting begins at noon in the Girls Inc. Community Room (120 E Adams).


February

18 – Rapid City - Come visit our booth at the Western Dakota Tech Wellness Fair to learn about Meth's impact, trends and what you can do. Don't forget to pick up some of our new brochures

21 – Rapid City The LaCrosse Estates Neighborhood Watch will receive "Meth in Your Neighborhood" training to help community residents recognize and report suspicious behavior related to Meth, especially Meth manufacturing. This is a follow-up to a detailed training on Meth's effects and signs and symptoms of use.

25 – Eagle Butte The CRST Coalition Against Meth Community Awareness will offer its first public community meeting. All community members are invited to attend to learn about Meth, the new MAP-Venture program, the CRST Coalition Against Meth and future plans to address Meth on the Rez.  The first hour will be an educational session on Meth, with the second hour to be a brainstorming session and community meeting to hear about current efforts and help provide input into the development of future efforts. Incentives and meal will be provided following the training and meeting. Similar meetings will be held in other Districts and communities of the Reservation

26 – Rapid City During the SD School of Mines & Technology Wellness Expo, MAPP-SD will staff a booth with information concerning Meth's impact, trends and what you can do to get involved


March

9 – Pine Ridge MAPP-SD Meth Prevention Coordinator Nikkole Abbas will offer “Meth 101 for Parents” – a community presentation for parents sponsored by the Pine Ridge Youth Development Coalition – from 5-7PM.  A meal will be provided.

12 – Rapid City A workshop focused on Meth and property issues will provide information for Real Estate professionals, counselors, alcohol & drug professionals, landlords and others concerned about or interested in the effects of Meth on property. Speakers will include MAPP-SD Meth Prevention Coordinator Nikkole Abbas, a drug agent from UNET (Unfiied Narcotics Enforcement Team), a cleanup contractor and attorneys specializing in Real Estate, Landlord/Tenant, Criminal and Personal Injury laws

19 (backup date March 20 in case of bad weather) - 2nd Annual Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Meth Conference - Several speakers have been invited to speak at this day-long conference that will focus on Meth's impact, its prevalence on the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation, and ways community members can fight back. The Conference will include emphasis on Lakota cultural values and traditions as part of the solution as well.
 


April

7 – Rapid City MAPP-SD Meth Prevention Coordinator Nikkole Abbas will present a Meth awareness session for students and staff of Western Dakota Tech (public welcome).  She will provide information on Meth's impact, dangers to the community and ways to get involved. 

9 – Rapid City MAPP-SD Meth Prevention Coordinator Nikkole Abbas will present a second Meth awareness session for students and staff of Western Dakota Tech (public welcome).  She will provide information on Meth's impact, dangers to the community and ways to get involved.  City

21 – Oglala The community is invited to attend Meth 101 for Parents/Family Night.  MAPP-SD Meth Prevention Coordinator Nikkole Abbas will provide information for parents, including signs, symptoms and effects of Meth use, how to help prevent your children from using drugs, and what to do if a problem is suspected. Youth activities are planned for children while parents are in the session, and a meal will be served.  The event is scheduled from 5-7PM at the Loneman School

22 – Sturgis MAPP-SD will have a booth open during the Sturgis Community Health Fair with information about Meth's impact, trends and what you can do to get involved. The Health Fair will be held at the Sturgis Community Center

23 – Rapid City MAPP-SD Meth Prevention Coordinator Nikkole Abbas will provide Drug Endangered Children (DEC) Training to new social workers with Pennington County Department of Social Services, Child Protective Services.  They will learn important details on working with families with Meth use, including safety protocols, signs and symptoms of use, hazardous conditions in homes and effects in children.

28 - Meth in Indian Country - Prevention Specialists will learn about Meth use and its effects, particularly in Indian Country as part of their Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist Training (SAPST), which is required for Prevention Specialist Certification (CPS designation).

28 – Fort Thompson Indian Health Services (IHS) staff will learn about the medical effects of Meth use, including safety concerns and suggested protocols for staff safety, presented by MAPP-SD Meth Prevention Coordinator Nikkole Abbas

28 – Fort Thompson Important community information related to Meth use will be provided in a community session in Ft. Thompson, sponsored by Indian Health Services
 


May

1 – Eagle Butte will learn MAPP-SD Meth Prevention Coordinator Nikkole Abbas will provide training on the effects of Meth use on children to the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Head Start staff.  She will also cover the signs and symptoms of Meth use so they can identify parents who may be using. Discussion of safety protocol and what should be done if suspected Meth use occurs will be included

4 – Douglas MAPP-SD will be providing joint sessions with the Unified Narcotics Enforcement Team (UNET) for parents and students of Douglas High School during their Alcohol & Drug Awareness Day


June

9 – Pierre The Oahe Chapter of South Dakota Electrical Council will learn important safety information related to Meth use and/or manufacture in homes they might enter to do electrical contracting work, particularly in rental properties.  During her presentation, MAPP-SD Meth Prevention Coordinator Nikkole Abbas will include signs and symptoms of Meth use, items associated with Meth labs, dangers of both use and manufacture, and strategies for safety

11 - Sturgis The Sturgis Kiwanis Club invites the community to a Meth Awareness program presented by MAPP-SD Meth Prevention Coordinator Nikkole Abbas from 7:30-8:00 AM at the Holiday Inn Express

16 - Porcupine and surrounding broadcast area MAPP-SD Meth Prevention Coordinator Nikkole Abbas, Youth & Family Services Prevention Specialist Vonnie Ackerman and Lakota Circles of Hope Prevention Coordinator Marcie Pudwill will be on KILI radio to talk about their programs and the Pine Ridge Youth Development Coalition

23 – Pine Ridge Community members and parents are invited to learn about the dangers of Meth use and how to recognize signs of use in young people in their family or community. MAPP-SD Meth Prevention Coordinator Nikkole Abbas will also address strategies for helping children stay Meth-free. The presentation is scheduled from 5:30-6:45 PM, with a meal to follow, at the Billy Mills Hall


July

9 – Rapid City MAPP-SD Meth Prevention Coordinator Nikkole Abbas will provide a brief overview of the signs and symptoms of Meth use and possible dangers to medical professionals related to such use for the staff of the Rapid City Community Health Center

14 - Sioux Falls Kevin Jensen will offer training on the impact Meth use and manufacturing has on a personal and community level to the South Dakota State Penitentiary/Impact of Crime on Victims class

15-17 – Kyle The OST/IHS Behavioral Health Summit (Healing the Mind, Emotions and Soul of the Oyate) includes a Suicide Awareness Bike/Run from Wanblee to Kyle on July 15, with a free concert and resource fair from 7:00-10:00 PM. On July 16-17, speaker Eduardo Duran will offer a Community Healing Workshop. MAPP-SD will have a resource booth during the concert/resource fair in the Little Wound School Gym

20 - Sioux Falls Darcy Jensen will present information on the dangers of Meth relating to children and home site workers to Bright Start Home Visitation Services

23 – Rapid City The quarterly MAPP-SD Rapid City Meth Coalition meeting at the YFS Girls Inc (120 E Adams) will include a panel of former users and family members impacted by a loved one's use of Meth.  The public and media are welcome to attend

28 – Rapid City
MAPP-SD Meth Prevention Coordinator Nikkole Abbas will offer training to CASA volunteers about the effects of Meth use on the user and on children who may live in a Meth home or be from such an environment, as well as safety tips for home visits if they are entering homes where Meth use or manufacture may still be an issue (cases in which children are still living with a parent who may be a user)

29 – Pine Ridge Awareness activities leading into the OST powwow will include a Four Directions Suicide/Meth Awareness Walk and a "Meth 101" community presentation, proclamation by OST Tribal Chairwoman Theresa Two Bulls, candlelight vigil, Talking Circle and more

30-31 – Pine Ridge Powwow Grounds Pine Ridge Youth Development Coalition and MAPP-SD will have a resource table at the annual health fair and powwow. Information will include dangers of Meth use and labs and impacts in Indian Country.


August

13- Wagner Visit Audrey Ticknor at the MAPP-SD informational booth during the SCC Teacher In-Service

31 – Brookings MAPP-SD Meth Prevention Coordinator Audrey Ticknor will offer in-depth Meth awareness training to the Brookings Domestic Abuse Shelter staff, focusing on working with clients who may be involved or affected by Meth.


September

3 – Eagle Butte MAPP-SD will have a resource table for youth on the dangers of Meth use and Meth labs during the annual CRST Youth Health Fair.

9 – Rapid City MAPP-SD will have a booth at the Western Dakota Tech Student Resource Fair to share information on Meth and its dangers, as well as services provided by our organization for students and staff, from 10AM -1PM.  At 3PM, students are invited to a Meth 101 presentation covering the dangers of Meth use and how it can impact various career paths (through exposure to possibly dangerous users as well as Meth labs) and what they can do about it.

17 - Sioux Falls MAPP-SD Meth Prevention Coordinator Audrey Ticknor presents information on Meth’s Oral Effects from 6:30-8:30pm to the Southeast Technical Institute Dental Assisting Class

21 – Watertown MAPP-SD Meth Prevention Coordinator Audrey Ticknor will present information about Meth outdoor safety to the South Dakota Association of County Highway Superintendents meeting at the Ramkota Inn

24 – Sioux Falls MAPP-SD Meth Prevention Coordinator Audrey Ticknor will offer a session for clinical lab managers, “What’s Your Meth IQ?” at the SDAHO (South Dakota Association of Healthcare Organizations) annual convention in Sioux Falls

27 – White River MAPP-SD Meth Prevention Coordinator Nikkole Abbas will provide information on dangers of Meth users and a Meth lab to First Responders at the Badlands District Fire School.  She will offer instruction on identifying Meth labs in the morning session. During the afternoon session, a Drug Task Force member will provide more detailed information on specific dangers, protocol in responding to a Meth lab and how to preserve evidence at the scene for law enforcement.

28 – Fedora Members of the South Dakota  Association of Towns and Townships will receive training on Meth outdoor safety from MAPP-SD Meth Prevention Coordinator Audrey Ticknor during their meeting at the fire hall.

28 – Sioux Falls MAPP-SD Director Darcy Jensen will provide in-depth training to students in the Pharmacy Technician Program at Southeast Technical Institute, covering both the basics of Meth as well as how it may impact them in their lives and careers.

30 – Rapid City MAPP-SD Meth Prevention Coordinator Nikkole Abbas will provide information on outdoor safety related to encountering potentially violent Meth users and hazardous Meth labs or dump sites while in parks and other outdoor areas during the annual Parks & Recreation Conference


October

6 - Sioux Falls MAPP-SD Meth Prevention Coordinator Audrey Ticknor will offer two trainings on Meth and its impact on children for staff at the Citibank Family Center

10 – Chamberlain MAPP-SD Coordinator Audrey Ticknor will present information on Children Living in a Drug Environment during SoDakSACA, meeting at the Cedar Shores Resort

17 -Rapid City MAPP-SD will have a resource table for youth and parents on the dangers of Meth use and Meth labs during the annual Red Ribbon Parade & Luncheon from 11:30 AM-1:30 PM at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology Surbeck Center

- During the South Dakota Housing Development Authority's Annual Housing Conference, MAPP-SD Meth Prevention Coordinator Nikkole Abbas will offer a session "Meth & Property Issues" to discuss issues related to Meth's impact on property; including contamination and cleanup of properties, as well as steps real estate professionals may take to prevent a problem in the first place.
 


November

12 - Lower Brule – MAPP-SD Meth Prevention Coordinator Nikkole Abbas will present information about Meth use, signs & symptoms and Meth lab safety to interested community members during the Community Lunch & Learn; beginning at noon in the Tribal Administration Building

19 - Sioux Falls MAPP-SD CFO Kevin Jensen will present information on Meth labs, their potential dangers and how to deal with them to employees during the Northwestern Energy Health Fair.


December

17 - Rapid City MAPP-SD Meth Prevention Coordinator Nikkole Abbas will offer a ‘Meth 101’ session for educators, administration, nurses, parents & community members at the annual conference in association with the Lakota Nations Invitational Basketball Tournament.  The session will include information on signs and symptoms of Meth use, Meth lab safety and more.  The session will start at 9AM in the Ramkota Hotel’s Harney Peak room

18 - Rapid City Meth in the Workplace - Breakout session focused on Meth in the Workplace will be offered during the Employee Assistance Program Conference. MAPP-SD Meth Prevention Coordinator Nikkole Abbas will present information about Meth use, signs and symptoms and possible impacts in a work setting, including safety of co-workers and others


18 - Rapid City MAPP-SD Meth Prevention Coordinator Nikkole Abbas will offer a breakout session on Meth in Indian Country during the Employee Assistance Program Conference.  The presentation will include information about how Indian Country has been impacted by Meth use and ways communities and tribes are fighting back
