MAPP-SD Events & Trainings - Current

January

9 - Spearfish Meth Prevention Coordinator Nikkole Abbas will present information on MAPP-SD's latest resources, including medical and foster parent training videos during the Northern Hills Prevention and Intervention Alliance meeting. Meeting is from 11:00-1:00 PM. For more information contact Kara at cps@rushmore.com.

15 – Pine Ridge
MAPP-SD Meth Prevention Coordinator Nikkole Abbas will present information on the signs and symptoms of Meth users to the Oglala Sioux Parks and Recreation Authority beginning at 1PM in the Prairie Wind Casino.

16 – Pine Ridge MAPP-SD VP Kevin Jensen will offer training on Meth lab detection/identification and related safety procedures to the Oglala Sioux Parks and Recreation Authority beginning at 9AM in the Prairie Wind Casino.

16 - Timber Lake MAPP-SD Meth Prevention Coordinator Nikkole Abbas will offer training to the school staff and interested community members on how to recognize Meth use by students or their parents and how this impacts the students and learning environment beginning at 3:30PM at the Timber Lake School

16 – Watertown MAPP-SD Meth Prevention Coordinator Kathy Asper will provide training regarding dangers of Meth use to students in the USD Nursing Class at Lake Area Technical Institute, beginning at 8AM.

22 - Brookings Parents, concerned adults and teens are invited to a Community Forum in the Brookings Middle School starting at 7PM.  A range of topics will be covered, including the local MAPP-SD Coalition and information on the area’s Drug Endangered Children response team. 

24 - Rapid City
The public is invited to attend Rapid City Meth Coalition's quarterly meeting
from noon until one at the YFS Girls Inc, 120 E Adams.  A member of the Governor's Statewide Meth Task Force will share information about the activities and accomplishments of the Task Force. Community members and media representatives are welcome to attend.

27 - Enemy Swim
MAPP-SD Meth Prevention Coordinator Kathy Asper will provide an afternoon training session for school staff regarding how Meth use impacts children.  In the evening, beginning at 6PM, parents are invited to attend an educational presentation at the school concerning Meth.


February

4 - Mission Meth Prevention Coordinator Nikkole Abbas will share information on the dangers of Meth for the student intervention group at the middle school

4 - Winner Meth Prevention Coordinator Nikkole Abbas will provide information on Meth use, signs and symptoms, and safety information for the staff of Southern Plains Behavioral Health Services at 3:00 PM.

15 - Spearfish Rapid City Meth Coalition members will have a booth at the Spearfish Community Health Fair at the Tretheway Pavilion.  The fair runs from 7 AM to 7 PM.

20 - Howes MAPP-SD Meth Prevention Coordinator Nikkole Abbas will offer training to the Takini School staff, focusing on the effects of Meth use, signs and symptoms of use and the impacts of parental Meth use on children in an after school in-service

28 – Rapid City
- MAPP-SD Rapid City Meth Coalition members will have a booth and will be available with information and resources on Meth at the SD School of Mines & Technology Health Fair; the fair runs from 10AM to 3PM in the SDSM&T Surbeck Center ballroom

29 - Rapid City MAPP-SD Meth Prevention Coordinator Nikkole Abbas will provide information on the signs and symptoms of Meth use or exposure, and associated health concerns for both adults and children, to the Annual Emergency Medicine Conference at the Holiday Inn City Centre. 


March

4- Chamberlain MAPP-SD Prevention Coordinator Kathy Asper will provide training regarding dangers of Meth use and Meth labs to participants at the SD Housing for Homeless Consortium Conference, sponsored by the SD Housing Development Authority. 

6 - Pine Ridge MAPP-SD Meth Prevention Coordinator Nikkole Abbas will offer training to the Prairie Winds Casino staff covering recognition of Meth use and manufacturing, safety issues, and what they can do.

13 - Watertown MAPP-SD Prevention Coordinator Kathy Asper will provide training regarding dangers of Meth use plus child endangerment issues to students in Child Care program at Lake Area Technical Institute.

17 - Watertown MAPP-SD Meth Prevention Coordinator Kathy Asper will provide training to Watertown High School students in Freshmen Health Classes on Meth and its dangers; recognizing signs and symptoms of use, and tips for seeking help if a problem is suspected.

25 - Eagle Butte Meth Prevention Coordinator Nikkole Abbas will speak to clients in the Intensive Outpatient Treatment program at Four Bands Healing Center. The afternoon presentation will include information on signs and symptoms of Meth use, child endangerment, and community impacts.

26 - Eagle Butte MAPP-SD will have a booth at a health fair at Cheyenne Eagle Butte High School.  
Students have already received classroom presentations on Meth and will now have the opportunity to reinforce what they learned and pursue further information.

27 - Waubay  Meth Prevention Coordinator Kathy Asper will provide information on Meth and its effects plus child endangerment issues to staff at Enemy Swim Day School.

27 - Waubay Parents and other community members are invited to a presentation, beginning at 6PM at the Enemy Swim Day School, by MAPP-SD Meth Prevention Coordinator Kathy Asper on basic Meth information.  

31 - Aberdeen Meth Prevention Coordinator Kathy Asper will provide information on Meth and its effects plus child endangerment issues to staff at Volunteers of America, Dakotas.


April

4 – White River Meth Prevention Coordinator Nikkole Abbas will present information on Signs and Symptoms and community impacts of Meth use during the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Meth Conference. Other speakers will include law enforcement and a former Meth user.
 

8 - Rapid City Meth Prevention Coordinator Nikkole Abbas will present "Meth and Mental Health Issues" to counselors at Behavior Management Systems. This presentation will include details of how Meth can affect mental health, as well as the similarities and differences between Meth's effects and certain other mental health diagnoses, such as bipolar disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

15 – Hill City All concerned community members are encouraged to attend a community event to learn more about Meth, signs and symptoms of use, Meth labs, dangers and how it impacts the community, and especially children in Meth homes. This free event, organized by SDSU School of Nursing students, will be held in the high school theater in Hill City starting at 6:30PM.

15 - La Plant MAPP-SD will have a booth at a health fair at Tiospaye Topa School. Students have already received classroom presentations on Meth and will now have the opportunity to reinforce what they learned and pursue further information.

17 – Eagle Butte A Meth Conference is scheduled to begin at 8:30AM with an Anti-Meth Walk, followed by a daylong event featuring include MAPP-SD Meth Prevention Coordinator Nikkole Abbas and Dr. John Hagan from the North Dakota State Penitentiary, as well as tribal program supervisors and staff.  Topics will range from medical effects of Meth use, the signs and symptoms of use, Meth in Indian Country, Meth and HIV, and effects on children. The conference is scheduled from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM with lunch provided at the Cultural Center.

23 - Sturgis The Rapid City Meth Coalition will have a booth at the Sturgis Health Fair, providing information on the dangers of Meth and community impact for area residents. The health fair runs from 11:00 to 5:00 at the Sturgis Community Center.

24 – Sioux Falls MAPP-SD Director Darcy Jensen will present information on the impact of Meth on children who live in or visit a home where Meth is used or manufactured.  The session will be a part of the SDAEYC/SDHSA Conference at the Sioux Falls Convention Center.

24 – Marty MAPP-SD Meth Prevention Coordinator Audrey Ticknor will offer information on the signs and symptoms of Meth use as well as the consequences of addiction at a booth during the Health Fair at the Community Center (Boys and Girls Club) from 10AM-3PM.

24 - Rapid City The MAPP-SD Rapid City Meth Coalition will invite a guest speaker from the Northern Hills Drug Court for its spring quarterly meeting. Coalition members, community and media are all invited to attend to learn more about the Drug Court and its progress since it began in fall 2007.

26 - Deadwood Members of the Rapid City Meth Coalition will have a booth during the Deadwood Health Fair at Deadwood Gulch. Coalition members will have information about Meth and its impact on the community, and can also share how community members can get involved or start their own Coalition against Meth. Health fair runs from 9:00-12:00 AM.

28 - Watertown MAPP-SD Prevention Coordinator Kathy Asper will provide training regarding dangers of Meth use to a Behavior Psychology class at Lake Area Technical Institute.


May

2 - Rapid City MAPP-SD Rapid City Meth Coalition will be providing information on Summer Safety for youth enrolled in Youth & Family Services' (YFS) various programs at a health fair at YFS Girls Inc. at 120 E Adams. The health fair will run from 10 AM to 3 PM.

5 - Aberdeen
MAPP-SD Prevention Coordinator Kathy Asper will provide training regarding dangers of Meth use plus child endangerment issues to attendees of the Family Child Care Professionals Conference

 15 – Rapid City MAPP-SD Meth Prevention Coordinator Nikkole Abbas will present information to the South Creek Village Neighborhood Watch about the signs and symptoms of Meth use and tip-offs related to recognizing suspicious activity in their neighborhood starting at 6PM at the South Creek Village.  Community members welcome to attend.

22 - Rapid City Meth Prevention Coordinator Nikkole Abbas will present information on Meth and property issues to property managers and landlords at a semi-annual Crime-Free Multi-housing Association training conducted by the Rapid City Police Department Crime Prevention unit.


June

17 – Eagle Butte MAPP-SD Meth Prevention Coordinator Nikkole Abbas will present a Meth 101 and Safety Concerns informational session for Community Health Representatives from all the Districts of the Cheyenne River Reservation.  The presentation will include the latest Meth-related information, including signs and symptoms of Meth use, health effects of Meth use, warning signs and dangers of Meth labs and safety strategies.  The session will run from 1-3 PM at the Wellness Center.  (NOTE: Administrative leave for tribal employees has been approved. Community members are also welcome to attend.)

25 - Rapid City - US Attorneys in South Dakota will learn about the effects of Meth on children and South Dakota laws related to Meth and kids during the US Attorneys' Conference.  MAPP-SD Meth Prevention Coordinator Nikkole Abbas will also offer information on Drug Endangered Children (DEC) Teams and how they can get involved or start DEC Teams in their regions.

29 – Burke A Community Wide Meth Awareness Event is scheduled for 5:30PM at the Civic Center.  MAPP-SD Meth Prevention Coordinator Audrey Ticknor will offer in-depth information about Meth and its impact on families, communities and our state.  Supper will be served beginning at 5PM.  Please view the poster (PDF) for more information.


August

12 -Sioux Falls MAPP-SD Director Darcy Jensen will present basic Meth awareness education to the Sioux Falls Lutheran School staff.

14 - Wagner MAPP-SD Meth Prevention Coordinator Audrey Ticknor will offer information concerning Meth's impact on children to approximately 650 K-12 teachers from various schools during the South Central Cooperative annual teacher in-service at the Wagner Community School.

26-27 - Eagle Butte MAPP-SD Meth Prevention Coordinator Nikkole Abbas will present Meth information and education during the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Youth Health Fair.


September

4 – Sioux Falls MAPP-SD Meth Prevention Coordinator Audrey Ticknor will provide an overview of Meth as it impacts health care providers and address Meth’s affect on dental health to the dental assisting class at Southeast Technical Institute.

16 – Rapid City The MAPP-SD Rapid City Meth Coalition will host a resource table at the 21st Annual He Sapa Behavioral Health Conference, held at the Best Western Ramkota Hotel.

23 - Cherry Creek MAPP-SD Meth Prevention Coordinator Nikkole Abbas will offer information to the community on the dangers of Meth use and manufacture and how it is impacting the Reservation and their community, as well as some things they can do to get involved in the fight against Meth.


October

3 – Watertown MAPP-SD Meth Prevention Coordinator Audrey Ticknor will present information on Meth and Drug Endangered Children to the SoDakSACA Conference at the Watertown Event Center & Best Western Ramkota Hotel.

6 – Sioux Falls MAPP-SD Director Darcy Jensen will address Meth’s impact on children, families and employers at the Citibank Family Center

7 – Rapid City The General Beadle Elementary PTA hosts MAPP-SD Meth Prevention Coordinator Nikkole Abbas, who will present important information about Meth and its dangers, as well as how to start early to prevent children from getting involved with alcohol and drug use.  The program begins at 5:00PM at the General Beadle Elementary School.

10 – Rapid City A special session during the Indian Country Conference will focus on Meth in Indian Country, presented by MAPP-SD Meth Prevention Coordinator Nikkole Abbas.  Participants will discover how Meth is impacting the Reservations in South Dakota and what is being done to fight Meth in Indian Country across the nationa as well as in South Dakota.

12 Madison MAPP-SD Meth Prevention Coordinator Audrey Ticknor will offer information about the dangers of Meth to students at Dakota State University during the campus’ health fair.

15 Rapid City MAPP-SD Meth Prevention Coordinator Nikkole Abbas will present a Community Awareness session to the residents at LaCrosse Estates about the signs of Meth use and labs as part of their Community/Neighborhood Watch crime prevention program beginning at noon.


December

5 & 12 Vermillion MAPP-SD Meth Prevention Coordinator Audrey Ticknor will present basic Meth information along with specific training for dental office workers concerning potential patients’ Meth use to the Dental Hygiene Department classes at the University of South Dakota.
